Chapter 16

Before Zetta could take Asa’s arm, Luttrell leaned over the homemade pew to swoop up Rachel.

“I’ll see you back at the house,” he said as he hurried toward the church door with the little girl in his arms—but not before Zetta saw him glance toward the pretty teacher listening to whatever the other miner was saying.

As Zetta sadly watched her brother leave, Clarie leaned forward.

“I saw what happened to Luttrell,” she whispered. “Clarence, that boy who moved in ahead of him, fast talks women all the time. Make sure you tell Luttrell not to give up.”

Zetta signed. “He’s not one to pick a fight—even when he’s right.”

Clarie lowered her voice even more. “Well, I don’t like seeing him being outdone. Especially by the likes of Clarence. And you can tell him I said so.”

Asa put his arm around Zetta and gently pulled her toward the aisle.

“Clarie, come home with us,” he said. “Zetta’s got a good dinner waiting.”

The older woman smiled. “I thank you,” she said. “But I’ve got chicken baking.”

She turned back to Zetta. “I’ll be around tomorrow. Tell Luttrell what I said.”

Zetta merely nodded.
